1. What is the Association for Language Learning (ALL) and how can it be contacted?

ALL is the major subject association in the UK for teachers of all languages in all sectors of education and in the field of business training.

2. Where can I learn a language in my area? 

Local Education Authorities keep lists of courses for specific languages in your area. Your LEA will be listed in your local telephone book.

 

Learndirect has lists of courses by geographical area. They can be contacted on 0800 100900 or you can search for a course on-line at www.learndirect.co.uk

 

NIACE publishes the Adult Learning Yearbook, which is a directory of organisations and resources in adult and continuing education. www.niace.org.uk/Publications/Periodicals/Yearbook.htm

 

3. Where can I find a list of tutors teaching a particular language in my area?

The Institute of Linguists has a free on-line Find-a-Linguist service at www.iol.org.uk which assists businesses and individuals to find a professional translator, interpreter, tutor or other language specialist.

5. How do I train to become a language teacher?

In addition to the information provided by the TTA (see above), the Centre for Language Teaching and Research (CILT) provides information specifically for training to teach languages at www.cilt.org.uk/training/index.htm CILT’s other services include publications, training courses, information leaflets, and a library.

6. Where can I obtain information on English as a foreign language (EFL)?

9. Where can I obtain information on setting up an exchange or finding an exchange partner?

10. How do I obtain information on studying a language abroad or at summer school?

There are many companies which organise language courses at summer schools and you will find various courses by searching the internet.

11. Who organises overseas courses for language teachers and is any funding available for them?

The Education and Training Group of the British Council can assist with information about EU-funded language courses abroad for UK language teachers. CILT also offers courses abroad for teachers who wish to refresh their language skills; some of these courses are eligible for Comenius funding.

Information on business languages can be obtained from the Languages National Training Organisation (LNTO). The LNTO also provides a free on-line database, BLIS Professionals, which allows you to search for a translator, interpreter, language trainer or cultural consultant in your region. www.blis.org.uk
